QA Software Testing Jobs in Toronto and the GTA: A Starter Guide for New Grads and Career Changers

The median systems testing technician in the Toronto region earns about $37 an hour. That's a good wage. It's also why you shouldn't expect these jobs to fall into your lap.
So here's the straight version: QA is a smart way into tech, and Toronto and the GTA have employers who need testers. It's just not an easy market. Let's look at what the numbers say and what you can do about it.

What a QA tester actually does
Testers don't just click around hoping something breaks. A QA analyst writes test cases and test scenarios, builds a test plan, and checks the software at each stage of development. The goal is simple: find problems before customers do.
Job Bank describes the work as putting test plans in place to make sure software and systems work. The same job goes by many names, so search all of them:

The Toronto and GTA market, honestly
What does that mean for you? Jobs exist, but employers can be picky. A certificate alone won't carry you. A certificate, practical skills and a clear story about how you test will.
Job Bank also notes this occupation usually calls for a college diploma, a long apprenticeship, or supervisory experience. Plenty of people come in from IT, computer science, business or international IT backgrounds. Your job is to prove you can do the work.
Where training fits
Software Testing Program (39 hours). Covers how testers work through the software life cycle, including test cases, scenarios and test plans. See the Software Testing Program page.
ISTQB-CTFL Exam Preparation (24 hours). The Certified Tester Foundation Level is a widely recognized entry credential. Step In 2 IT is an accredited ISTQB training provider for CTFL in Canada. Details on the ISTQB-CTFL page.
Then add automation. Manual testing is the right starting point. Selenium is a widely used open-source tool for automating browser tests, and Step In 2 IT runs a separate Selenium automation program when you're ready.
Where a QA career can go
Your 90-day plan
- Learn the fundamentals. Test cases, test plans, defect reports, the life cycle.
- Earn ISTQB Foundation. It gives your resume a recognizable credential.
- Build a small portfolio. Write test cases for an app you already use.
- Add automation. Start Selenium once manual basics feel solid.
- Search every job title. And look beyond downtown: North York, Scarborough, Mississauga, Markham, Brampton.
Frequently asked questions
Is QA training in Toronto worth it for a beginner?
It can be, if the training leads to skills you can show. Toronto-region pay is solid, but the near-term outlook is limited, so practical work and a recognized credential matter.
What should I look for in a software testing course in the GTA?
Look at hours, hands-on practice, what tools are actually covered, and who teaches it. Ask for the syllabus before you pay.
Is there QA software testing training with job assistance in Toronto?
Yes. Step In 2 IT offers QA software testing training with job placement assistance. Trainees describe support with resume building, interview preparation and introductions to potential employers. No provider can guarantee a job, so ask what assistance includes and contact us about the program you want.
Can I take software QA tester training from Brampton, Mississauga or Scarborough?
Yes. We serve Toronto, Brampton, Scarborough, Mississauga and Markham, and our office is at 1315 Lawrence Avenue East in North York. We also run free demo sessions for North York and Scarborough. Contact us about current batch formats and schedules.
Are there entry level QA tester jobs in Brampton and the wider GTA?
Yes. Job Bank postings have included tester roles in Brampton, Mississauga, Markham and North York, though availability changes. Search job titles beyond "QA."
Do I need a QA automation course in Toronto, or is manual testing enough?
Start with manual fundamentals, then add automation. Many testers need both to compete well.
Is ISTQB certification training in Toronto worth it?
For beginners, it's a recognized way to show you understand testing fundamentals. It works best alongside hands-on skills.
Do employers expect API testing and SQL?
Some do, especially for more technical QA roles. Check the postings you want and ask any course which tools it covers.
